With legislation on its way that will require the whole development community to search for greener solutions and the final form of the revised Part L of the Building Regulations scheduled for 31 December 2005, buildings will be changing to having less glazing and more innovative cooling and heating systems. Looks at the work of engineers Atelier Ten and Arup in designing more energy-efficient buildings that use facilities such as passive and earth-coupled cooling and biomass-fuelled combined heat and power plants. Energy labelling will show the design intention of buildings and the design rating will have to be posted in larger public buildings.
