Reports that the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has made 30 recommendations on improving the safety of tall buildings following the September 11 attacks. Detailed recommendations are discussed under the headings of increasing structural integrity, enhancing the fire resistance of structures, developing new methods for fire-resistance design of structures, implementing active fire-protection systems, improving building evacuation, emergency response, and practices and procedures, and providing better education and training for fire safety professionals.
