Discusses the case law since "Yianni v Edwin Evans and Sons" ([1981] 259 EG 969) in respect of independent chartered surveyors carrying out mortgage valuations for a building society being held liable for negligence by purchasers of inspected houses, in particular "Smith v Eric S Bush (a firm)" ([1989] 1 EGLR 169). Points out that a mortgage valuer's duty of care to a residential purchaser does not extend to a property developer's commercial venture.
