Discusses the likely impact on roof design of the proposed changes to Part L of the Building Regulations, which are intended to improve the energy efficiency of buildings. From April 2006, if major repairs are required to roofs, building regulation approval will be needed, and thicker thermal insulation will have to be installed. Practical difficulties are anticipated with some flat roofs, and the additional costs may well outweigh the intended benefits.
