Sustainable reality
Howard, Paul
Sustainable reality - 2005 - Contract Journal 431(6554) 7 December 2005, 17(1) .
Discusses the conclusions of the "Wates Report:failing communities breaking the cycle", (L131793) which argues that the objective of building sustainable communities is being put at risk by a failure on the part of government, clients and particularly the construction industry to modify attitudes and change practices. The industry too often fails to look beyond short-term costs, both financial and environmental, whilst the segregation of new housing from other forms of development, such as retail, leisure and education facilities, risks creating new ghettoes. Practical steps towards sustainability are outlined in a separate box.
