Japanese knotweed issues for the construction industry - 2006 - Building Engineer 81(1) January 2006, 30-31(2) .

Examines the problems posed to the construction industry by Japanese Knotweed. The plant can penetrate minute cracks in mortar, concrete and tarmac, ultimately leading to structural damage. The principal methods for eradicating Japanese Knotweed, including spraying and digging, have substantial cost and time implications, and the industry is looking at new technologies, such as those used on a recent flood alleviation scheme at Hexham, Northumberland, which is studied in detail.
