Considers the role of Health Impact Assessment (HIA) in the planning process. HIA is a tool used to evaluate whether a project or proposal might reinforce health inequalities or inadvertently damage people's health. Local planning authorities are increasingly requesting them for major land developments. There is no systematic approach for the use of HIAs in the planning context and relevant guidance is lacking. Examines the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management's December 2005 HIA position paper (L132451) which sees HIAs as filling the significant gaps left by environmental impact assessments and pushes for formal guidelines for their use in individual planning applications
