Describes a pioneering commonhold development project in Milton Keynes, the first by a volume house builder. Crest Nicholson's Oakgrove Millennium Community scheme will adopt a commonhold structure. Explains why this developer chose commonhold which will provide a model for future Crest Nicholson developments. Discusses how commonhold will work and suggests some ways in which the present commonhold legislation could be improved. Concludes that, although commonhold is not a panacea for community living, it does offer a system of land tenure that is potentially superior to leasehold.
