A stairway to homeownership
Driscoll, James
A stairway to homeownership - 2006 - Estates Gazette (0609) 4 March 2006, 175-176(2) .
Describes the advantages of the co-ownership or shared ownership trust model as a means by which those on low incomes can buy a stake in their home. Whereas the statutory restriction on the leasing of residential commonhold units such as flats and houses has acted as a disincentive to using commonhold, the new co-ownership model developed by Trowers and Hamlins is an effective alternative to the shared-ownership lease and obviates the use of long leases in a commonhold. Explains how co-ownership trusts can deliver low-cost homeownership and how the equity is shared. Outlines the legal arrangements of the shared ownership trust and the advantages of this new model.
