Fires cost the economy £7.03bn in 2004, of which more than a third was incurred in respect of fire precautions. The total cost of fire fell by 7% in nominal terms during 2003/4. The average cost of a domestic fire is estimated at £24 900, whilst that of a fire in a commercial building is £43 800.
