The new houses in multiple occupancy legislation is now in effect. As a key part of the Housing Act 2004, new laws have brought in a mandatory licence for landlords and properties with three or more separate tenants. It is designed to guarantee well-managed and safer buildings, and is aimed at protecting university students in rented accommodation. The new system is thought to become big business for large corporate providers. But small landlords may struggle to keep up with the new standards of fire protection and management.
