Recent research suggests that the NHBC's requirement for cavities in timber and steel-framed houses increases the fire risk, with the cavity potentially acting as a chimney. Whilst the NHBC refutes the findings, some housebuilders want more emphasis placed on modern methods of construction, such as single skin walls, or the Powerwall system, which uses thin aluminium foil for buildings with light gauge steel frames.
