There has been significant growth in the Irish construction industry in the past decade, so that in 2005 it produced 18% of GDP, and employed 13% of the workforce. Housing accounted for 64% of total output, with infrastructure also making a strong contribution. New construction work is expected to grow by 1% in 2006, and it is anticipated that tender prices will rise by 5-6% in the same period. Construction costs rose by 3.5% in the first quarter of 2006.
