English law has adopted an approach where property is purchased on the basis of its open-market value when requisitioned for redevelopment. However owner occupiers often cannot purchase alternative housing in the same area as the price of property often increases in the area due to regeneration making the area more desirable. Discusses whether local authorities, developers and housing agencies do enough to help alleviate the disruption caused to residents when their buildings are demolished in regeneration schemes, and what options may be available in providing residents with a fairer deal.
