Argues the case for putting Quantity Surveyors (QSs) on the Works Permits UK skills shortage list, to make it easier for companies to employ QSs from abroad. Discusses the current shortfall of UK QSs, and industry concerns over how to meet demand, in light of the 2012 Olympic Games and the revival of the commercial market. Notes that a legal change to training permits in October 2004 has exacerbated the problem, with overseas QSs on 12 month training and work experience permits less likely to be given extensions or full permits. This has resulted in less overseas trainees coming to the UK. Includes a case study of a trainee QS from China.
