Provides an overview of the work of the PURE project being run on Unst, Shetland. The project aims to store and generate energy using hydrogen fuel cells. Argues that with the right technical advances, this could become the most effective form of renewable energy. There is great interest in the Shetlands, where incomes are low and fuel expenditure is high. The UK government has yet to pay full attention to the possibilities of hydrogen fuel cells.
