Buried infrastructure as prerequisites for development of a civilisation geolocating the underworld maze of pipes and cables - 2007 - Geo Informatics 10(4) June 2007, 50-51(2) .

Describes the purpose and organisation of the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council's £1m underground mapping and positioning research project. There is a lack of reliable data concerning a great deal of aging underground structures, pipes and cables. The project aims to improve buried asset location, identification and condition assessment technologies; methods of detection of buried assets; mapping and positioning technologies; and knowledge and data integration. A second project aims to develop low cost detectable remotely detectable labels to be fixed to underground assets. It aims to prevent the problem recurring in future.
