Defining the neighbourhood challenges for empirical research

Jenks, Mike

Defining the neighbourhood challenges for empirical research - 2007 - Town Planning Review 78(2) 2007, 155-177(25) .

Attempts to define what is meant by the term neighbourhood, particularly for empirical research. While the term is often used as a viable and relevant setting, it is ambiguous and there is no consensus in definition. Refers to a review of existing interpretations of neighbourhood. Tests two objective methods of delineation. Compares objective mapping exercises against residents' perceptions. Concludes by examining the validity of the theory-based definitions.
