In light of Entec's forthcoming review of the planning system to enable small businesses to install microgenerators, this article briefly looks the issues surrounding renewable technologies and planning permission. Currently some uncertainty exists as to whether permission is required for certain equipment and planning authorities often interpret the planning system in different ways. Highlights recent discussions over the Merton rule and suggests that once Entec?s review is completed, government is likely to amend the general permitted development order.
