Paper based on research into availability of vacant land for development in inner Manchester . Focuses on the real constraints upon the immediate development of such land, including complex ownership patterns, land price constraints and physical constraints such as adverse ground conditions, lack of services, adjacent uses and lack of, or substandard access to a highway. Demonstrates how these factors act as barriers to the development process and prolong land vacancy. Concludes that future local land policies will need to develop a concerted approach to tackling these constraints if the inner city is to compete with the urban periphery for new development.
