Examines the opportunities offered by green belt areas to promote new approaches to sustainable growth and green infrastructure. Discusses development demands and the extent to which they are putting pressure on green belt areas. Argues that good planning can lead to multifunctional open spaces providing recreational facilities for residents as well as corridors which link up wildlife habitats. Such areas can be factored into planning gain applications. Suggests that development might not be the only areaway in which communities can benefit from such areas. Examines the development of the Swindon sub-region as a case study.
