Considers why there is less funding being invested in construction Research and Development (R&D). In 2001, £18m government expenditure was invested in construction R&D, but this has now fallen to between £5 and £10m. Reasons for this decline include; a misunderstanding about what is meant by R&D, the drop in the number of technical guides and codes being published, the reluctance of the construction industry itself to invest money in R&D, the difficulty of protecting intellectual property, and the sprawling nature of the construction industry. Concludes by looking at other sources of funding and ways around the problem.
