In the quarter to December 2007, there were around 37 900 new house building starts in England, down by 10% compared with the same quarter in 2006, and 48 500 completions, up by 15%. For 2007, the estimate for starts is 166 900, a 6% decline compared with 2006. However, the figure for completions for 2007 is 174 900, the highest level in 18 years.
