Discusses plans to overhaul the environmental assessment method, BREEAM. The current system is thought to be too weak, with excellence ratings given out too readily and strangely weighted rating criteria. To address these problems, the new BREEAM will introduce minimum requirements for energy and water consumption, post-construction certification, an outstanding category, rewards for environmental innovations, and minimum requirements for materials selection. The changes to BREEAM will be launched in May and will come into force in August.
