Article looks at local spacial planning and Planning Policy Statement 12 (PPS12) and suggests that councils must embrace the new planning framework to offer creative planning solutions, while making more of an effort to engage sharholders. In addition highlighting to key changes brought about through PPS12, the authors make various suggestions for lessons that can be drawn from the statement. These include basing issues firmly on matters arising from initial consultations; entering into dialogue with local sharholders and using sustainability appraisal in the evaluation of options and to inform decisions.
