Discusses and analyses the expansion of the privately rented sector (PRS) from 1988 and indicates factors that may undermine supply and lead to further housing problems. These include tenancy deposit schemes, which the author suggests are an expensive and disproportionate way to manage disputes in the PRS and calls to increase the security of tenure of tenants and change the status of Short Assured Tenancies, which could lead to landlords exiting the market to avoid exposing themselves to reduced control over the tenancies they offer.
