Suggests that affordable housing offers those who might not be able to afford a house on the open market a chance to get on the housing ladder. However a number of problems with the current system are identified, including the need for effective marketing; the complexity of buying a shared ownership home; and the lack of flexibility by lenders. Argues that overcoming these problems could mean that low-cost home ownership could play an important part in rebuilding confidence in the UK housing market.
