The key issues when choosing adaptation of an existing building over new build
Watson, Paul
The key issues when choosing adaptation of an existing building over new build - 2009 - Journal of Building Appraisal 4(3) 215-223(9) .
Highlights the role that adapting or refurbishing buildings could have in addressing the UK's housing and commercial building problems. Argues that adaptation/refurbishment should take into consideration sustainability issues. Recommends that adaptation/refurbishment be done via a feasibility study to ensure that the project proceeds with minimal problems and to allow a full and proper assessment of how the building may best be upgraded, to take advantage of both energy efficiency and other environmental improvements. Puts forward a decision-making model to facilitate this process. Concludes that adaptation work may present continuing professional development opportunities and challenges for surveyors.
