Competition issues can result from acquisitions in the retail sector and sometimes clearance should be first obtained from the European Commission' Competition Commission (CC) or the Office of Fair Trading (OFT). Two merger control jurisdictions operate in the UK: 1 the European Community Merger Regulation and 2 The UK Merger Control. Also reference to recent examples of retail acquisitions: 1 Cine-UK's proposed acquisition of the lease of a former cinema in North London, referred to the OFT; 2 Tesco's acquisition of a Co-Op store in Slough, referred to the CC; and 3 the acquisition by Home Retail Group (HRG) of 27 Focues stores, investigated by the OFT.
