Non-binding green clauses are being used by landlords to encourage occupiers to work with them to cut carbon emissions and waste. The Better Buildings Partnership, part of the London Climate Change Agency, has produced a toolkit to help owners and occupiers to achieve the benefits of green leasing through a non-legally binding Memorandum of Understanding. The challenges of managing multi-tenanted buildings are central to the purpose of this toolkit. Opinion in the property industry however remains split as to the future of green leases and they may fall by the wayside in the current economic climate.
