Housing and mortgage markets continued to improve in the second half of 2009 ending the year in a stronger position than at the beginning of 2009. Due to the rush to complete transactions by end of December 2009 due to the ending of the stamp duty holiday on properties worth between £125 000 and £175 000 activity fell dramatically in January. Low mortgage interest rates continue to help borrowers.
