The latest Local Data Company (LDC) survey of the retail sector confirms that average vacancy rates at 14.3% are higher than ever before. The changing high street occupancy is of concern to many: pound shops, charity shops, bookies, nail bars, and fast-food outlets have all enjoyed double-digit growth during the past few years. Comparison data on shop vacnacy rates from LDC's European partner Locatus is included for the first time. Town centres in the UK need to be shrunk and mixed-use space must be created. Tables cover 10 best and worst large, medium and small centres; national vacancy rates; net change in comparison goods.
