Business rates - a tax on commercial property - have now overtaken rent in some locations across the UK as the biggest property cost burden on businesses. The retail sector has been particularly hard hit as it occupies some of the highest-valued commercial property in the UK. Business rates have even continued rising in areas where retail rents have fallen. There is concern that the business rates system is out of syc with wider changes in the property market.
