Examines the legal framework of shale gas planning applications in the context of these applications being fast tracked at the same time as a number of environmental safeguards are introduced. The fast tracking will not mean any changes to existing legislation but the secretary of state will call in shale planning applications on a case by case basis and will be encouraged to take decisions instead of local councils if they repeatedly fail to determine applications within the 16 week statutory timeframe.
