A series of six articles examining the performance and use of materials in two different but complementary listed building refurbishment projects: the Skin Floor at Tobacco Dock , a London docklands warehouse currently being renovated to provide shopping facilities and St Marks , Silvertown , an east London parish church , being restored to provide archive and exhibition space for a local history museum . Explains the two buildings` architectural importance and the historical background to their restoration, before going onto consider in detail the building materials used in the refurbishment: slate , timber , cast iron , brick , terracotta and stone . The final article describes how fire control systems were incorporated into the two buildings without destroying their historic character. Photos. Diagrams.
