Since 1 February 2016, the Immigration Act 2014 requires landlords and letting agents to check the immigration status of a prospective tenant. Landlords and letting agents should also be aware that they have a duty under the Equality Act 2010 not to discriminate against individuals and to be mindful of data protection rules under the Data protection Act 1998 when storing personal data.
