A comparative study of housing finance institutions round the world published in the latest Bank of England Quarterly Bulletin shows that countries with the more liberal mortgage lending policies such as Great Britain and the United States of America have a lower level of personal savings than countries such as Germany with more tightly controlled systems. Emergence of the single market and the opening up of the mortgage securitisation market and the availability of loans on an international market will have an important on the housing finance market worldwide.
