Discusses the meaning of `family` in the Rent Acts; the matter is important in order to decide if a person can succeed to a statutory tenancy. Refers particularly to Chios Property Investment Company Ltd v Lopez, (see Abstract 38814), where the respondent was held to have been a member of her deceased cohabitee`s family, although they had only been living together for two years and Sefton Holdings v Cairns, (see Abstract 39079), where the landlord`s appeal was successful and the 70-year old respondent lost the right to reside in the house which had been her home since 1941.
