520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Discusses approaches that can be adopted where deep foundations are not an economically viable solution for low-rise housing developments. Raft foundations can be used but, when differential settlement occurs, the building may tilt as a rigid body. This prevents significant distortion of the building and consequent cracking of the walls, but may be unacceptable if the tilt is noticeable. Suggests that tilt is typically noticed when it is in the region of 1/250 to 1/200 but remedial action is only necessary where is the tilt is 1/100 or greater. Case studies.
