Summary, etc. DEFRA has announced revised rates of hill farm allowance for 2005. They represent an increase on figures previously published for 2005, although they are lower than rates paid to hill farmers in 2004. For example, severely disadvantaged land at the full rate of 0-350ha will be £29.78 per ha as apposed to £24.82 - the original 2005 rate. The budget for hill farm allowance is £27.2m and provides support to hill farmers to compensate them for the disadvantages of upland farming and also indicates recognition of the vital contribution made by hill farmers to maintenance of the landscape and upland rural communities. http://www.gnn.gov.uk/Content/Detail.asp?ReleaseID =125910&NewsAreaID=2
