Summary, etc. The House of Lords is the highest court of law in the UK- the supreme court of appeal. It acts as the final court on points of law for the whole of the United Kingdom in civil cases; and for England, Wales and Northern Ireland in criminal cases. Its decisions bind all courts below. Lists in full-text all House of Lords judgments delivered since 14 November 1996 until 30 July 2009. The judgments take the form of the Law Lords' speeches, called "opinions". They are the equivalent of a judge's reasoned judgment in the lower courts.
