Abstract John Carr of York (1723 – 1807) was one of the most prolific and significant architects of the eighteenth century, with an output of over 400 designs, most of which were executed. His designs vary from simple gateways through to the grandest schemes, such as that for the palatial hospital at Oporto in Portugal, Harewood House and village in Yorkshire, and Basildon Park in Berkshire. This title was published to coincide with the 300th anniversary of John Carr's birth, celebrates a lifetime of study and dedication to one of the 18th century's greatest architects.
