| Summary, etc. | QBD 23 January 1987. Action alleging negligence by an employee of the district council over the loan for a mortgage on a house. The plaintiffs applied for a loan by way of a mortgage to the council. Before granting the loan, the defendants instructed their surveyor to inspect the house. The resulting report stated the house was in good structural and decorative order, and valued at 11,750. The council offered a loan of 10,900. The plaintiffs did not have an independent survey, but relied on a letter from the authority confirming that it afforded security for the loan. Soon after moving in, they noticed a gap between skirting board and floor in one room. A further inspection was made on behalf of the authority and the plaintiffs were reassured there was nothing to worry about and that it was due to settlement .
