Summary, etc. In Britain hill and upland areas provide 50% of sheep and wool output and 20-25% of beef cattle output. By supporting agriculture in such areas it is hoped that population will be maintained and the countryside conserved. A study in Skye and Lochalsh District found two principal opportunities for farms in marginal areas. The first was improvement in livestock and the development of marketing of a quality product. The second was employment outside farming, with farming as a part-time or spare-time occupation. However, opportunities for off-farm work are limited and further requests for funds to provide such employment may be made to the Government or to the EEC to maintain the viability of farms in marginal areas .
