| Summary, etc. | Considers the development of urban policy and investigates the integration of social and economic regeneration. Urban policy in the 1980s tackled physically derelict areas, but failed to improve conditions for people living in very deprived areas. The growth of anti-poverty strategies (APS) in local authorities prompted a revision of urban policy, with the suggestion of a convergence between economic and social regeneration. Article discusses the findings from eight local authority case studies, commissioned by the DOE in 1996 to examine how APS and regeneration policies co-exist, and the potential for developing partnerships. Issues highlighted by this research are considerable and have policy implications for local government, regeneration partnerships and central government. References. |
