Summary, etc. Ponds, wetlands and permeable surfaced car parks can all play a role in flood prevention as forms of sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS). As well as dealing with water quality and flooding issues, SUDS can also provide a better habitat for wildlife compared with conventional drainage systems. 300 SUDS are currently the focus of a major monitoring and research project in Scotland.
