Summary, etc. Looks at improvements in fire safety with reference to the European Commission 1986 recommendations on fire safety in hotels. Independent research has shown that this has only had a limited improvement in boosting fire safety standards. EC policy makers remain positive about the effect of the legislation and argue the way forward is to issue new proposals which will be published in 2003. However, many groups believe that more radical legislation is needed. The Fire Safety Development Group for example favours the introduction of a new European directive on hotel fire safety.
