A series of five articles examining earthquakes and their engineering implications. The first article focuses on Tajikistan where a natural dam in the Baratang valley poses an earthquake risk and discusses how engineers are assessing its threat to prevent a crisis. The second article looks at the lessons learnt by UK engineers from a 2001 earthquake in the Indian state of Gujarat and the steps being taken to avoid such loss of life again. The third article shows how new satellite imaging techniques are enabling engineers to combat earthquakes. The fourth article shows how soil modelling and design is helping to creat earthquake resistant oil platforms in Siberia. Finally the fifth article looks at how specialised engineering research is undertaken by geotechnical centrifuges. |
