| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | Discusses whether Scottish forestry could follow the example set by Sweden and turn wood-fuel into a highly efficient form of alternative energy. At present the forestry industry is faced by increases in timber supplies forcing down prices and producing thousands of tonnes of by-product which needs to be disposed of safely and in an environmentally-friendly manner. But, as part of the UK, Scotland must also comply with agreements on reductions in energy emissions. Sweden already has shown the benefits of using timber industry by-products with huge environmental benefits, such as increased energy output, reduced sulphur dioxide and pollution, against the pollutants produced by fossil fuels; burning timber is also carbon-neutral. Ends with a plea to the Scottish Executive to encourage wood-fuelled heating as well as green electricity initiatives. |
