Summary, etc. Action programmes designed to prevent and reduce nitrate pollution in Scotland are introduced. Farmers will be required to control the timing and rate of applications of nitrogen fertiliser and manures in areas designated as nitrate vulnerable zones. The proposed closed periods for the application of slurry have been shortened, this will reduce by over 65% the estimated costs to farmers of providing additional slurry storage facilities.
